Frieze Frame: 5 Names to Know This Year

Another week, another internationally celebrated art fair. Here’s the quirk-and-dirty on the buzzy contemporary Frieze New York:

—It’s an art fair in a big white tent on Randall’s Island, this year from May 5-8;
—On view: emerging talent, contemporary icons, lectures and food booths;
—It’s split up into three sections: Frame (galleries 8 years and younger), Focus (solo projects conceived just for Frieze), and Spotlight (solo stuff made in the 1900s);
—You will need Instagram to navigate. That’s where this list comes in.

One of the best new additions to Frieze is one you won’t find on display: director Victoria Siddall. Last year, she gave a great interview to Artsy, but the takeaway is that she’s a pioneer of change with total respect of old-school gallerists. On her watch, Frieze Week Magazine launched, and she’s started tailoring each of the three fairs–London, New York, and Masters which she founded—in step with shift in market, collectors, the general attitude of the world. She’s also charming, honest, and loves her cats, so, points.

Back again this year at Frieze is The Third Line, a Dubai-based gallery repping contemporary artists from the Middle East. The gallery’s one of the most serious and respected dedicated platforms for current art in that region, and they’ve brought their big guns from the Gulf: Abbas Akhavan, Ala Ebtekar, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Pouran Jinchi, Rana Begum and Sherin Guirguis. Those names may not mean much to you just yet, but if you end up at Randall’s seek them out.

One of the best parts of this fair is Frieze Talks, and this year, a lucky get is Jens Hoffman, the Deputy Director of The Jewish Museum in the city. He’s a self-professed fair addict from 22-years-old, and he’s brazenly honest about learning to love fairs and see through the commerciality which could drain the experience of its point: to get artists in front of those who need to know them. Small in follower count, but when it comes to art, what’s a number, really? The Cape Town-based gallery is posting up at Frieze for the first time ever, showing large-scale wall tapestries by textile artist Ingshaan Adams.

Price is a big conversation at fairs, since some people are there to actually buy the stuff. Frieze’s dealers and gallerists have found that $50k is a sweet spot, and this gallery naturally sits right there with feminist sculptures by Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perrett, and while her feed is pretty bananas-great on its own, following a gallery exposes you to more.
