They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder – but according to you (and us, and instagram…) throughout the past 12 months, it appears to live elsewhere; like between laminated brows, or its “Soap Brow” DIY sister and dreamy, creamy everything. 2021 beauty was all about au naturale – perhaps in a world where we’re interviewing, reminiscing and even dating behind screens, we have come to the digital conclusion that lip oil and cheeky nail designs go a long way.
Fashion Superlatives
Keeping up with a 2021 lifestyle was equally cozy as it was chic, courtesy of SKIMS. Like the Paris & Kim velvet sweatsuit photoshoot 90s babies didn’t know they needed, to its inclusive size and color range for all gals in your crew – SKIMS took the cake. And when it was time to, you know, leave the living room… Set Active was the best-in-class set of choice, paired with old-school New Balance kicks and maybe even a Marc Jacobs comeback item. 2004 called, and they said we can have it all for keeps.
Iconic Sports Moments
First things first: 2021 was the year of the OLYMPICS. Not only a monumental moment for sport – but with Simone Biles as an advocate for mental health awareness, this year goes down in history and sets a positive stage for athletes everywhere. Meanwhile, other top sports stars reached new heights – from Steph Curry’s record for most 3 pointers made in NBA history (!!!) to Emily Raducanu winning the US Open at 18 years old (jaw is still dropped) – it’s about time that the NCAA opened the floor for its athletes to get paid as brand sponsors associated with their name and likeness. Goals.
Entertainment’s Viral Moments
When it comes to entertaining content online, 2021 did not hold back. It seems like only yesterday that we were sending voice notes in the groupchat about what Harry REALLY said during his Oprah Interview, and sharing Bernie memes like they were feta pasta recipes #tbt. Excuse us while we jam to Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘good 4 u’ one more time, while raising a toast to Britney’s [FINALLY] freedom. Then it’s off to watch Squid Games, duh.
Celebrity Relationships
There’s nothing we love more than a celebrity situation-ship, and 2021 really understood the assignment. From what feels like a premium collab between Megan Fox/MGK x Kourtney Kardashian/Travis Barker to Ben Affleck winning the GF lottery with JLO, we don’t even know where to begin. But we do know where to end – Kim K & Pete Davidson. We’re just going to let that sit there for a sec.
Best Brand Collabs
This year’s brand collaborations had us saying “oh, that makes sense!” just as often as we DMed a pic to our BFF with the caption: “DID YOU SEE THIS?!” Like, luxury surf brand Stussy and Birkenstock linking up, or SKIMS & Fendi getting cozy between the sheets. But nothing tops Devon Lee Carlson teaming up with Marc Jacobs for a Y2K-esque collection that is youthful, colorful, and fun – a vibe we hope to take with us in the new year.
